Android and iPhone: A Tale of Two Articles

Saturday 09th of January 2010 / androidguys.com
On what should have been a quiet Saturday, a pair of reviews/articles showed up online that provide an interesting counterpoint to Ray Walters’ The Android Army is Rising post.On the one hand, we have Jason Kincaid’s The Switch From iPhone To Android, And Why Your First Impression Is Wrong, appearing in TechCrunch. Mr. Kincaid makes what should be an obvious point, but one that gets overlooked a lot — your past experience has an impact on your view of the present. The crux: long-time iPhone users will need some time to get used to Android, and off-the-cuff reviews don’t give reviewers that kind of time. This is no different than if, say, I were to try a Palm Pixi for a day or two and offer up a review, as it would take me more time than that to truly appreciate the differences between WebOS and Android. On the other hand, we have “Boy Genius” (not sure his real name) and Google Android Personal Thoughts, appearing in his Boy Genius Report blog. This article shreds Android to bits. Some of his complaints are valid and oft repeated in Android-land, su

Mplayit: "'How Many Apps?' is Wrong Question

Wednesday 13th of January 2010 / androidguys.com
I show my G1 off to a lot of people.  I love to wow them with cool apps like Google Sky Map, Plink Art, and Shop Savy.  Invariably the question comes up, “How many apps are there for that phone?”  Thanks to Apple’s marketing efforts, consumers have been brainwashed into thinking quantity trumps quality.  Fortunately, we have people in places like Mplayit who are doing their part to show that the number of apps means nothing to casual users.“‘How many apps?’ is the wrong question,” said Michael Powers, CEO and founder of Mplayit.  ”People just want to get the job done. It doesn’t matter if there are 50 different to-do list apps on iPhone, because Android or BlackBerry just need a couple of good ones to make consumers happy.”I couldn’t agree more.  There are already a ton of “crapplications” in the Android Market that I just skip over as I look for better titles.  I couldn’t imagine having to cut through 4-5 times the volume.  Android apps are getting better all the time, adding

Augen's 7" Android Tablet hits K-Mart stores this week for $149

Monday 26th of July 2010 / droidforums.net
When you thought "inexpensive" and "tablet" don't belong in the same sentence, K-Mart is about to prove you wrong. The Augen GenTouch Android tablet is hitting K-Mart shelves this weekend, according to its latest circular, for the low price of $149. You will be getting a 7" 800x480 TFT LCD screen, 800Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, 2GB storage, WiFi connectivity, SD/MMC slot (up to 16GB) and Android 2.1 with Market capability. The rest of the specs are unknown at this time, but for $149 I would expect the CPU to be an older ARM6 or ARM11. And if that wasn't enough, the Augen GenTouch comes with a leather carrying case and AC Adapter. The GenTouch may not be as spiffy as the German WeTab or the Dell Streak, but for the price, you certainly can't go wrong! We believe this to be the first readily-available-in-the-US Android 2.1 tablet, and are extremely excited to get our paws on one soon. Check out a video user review of the Auger GenTouch Tablet (cheers MrJn7) Anyone planning on snagging a GenTouch this weekend? Let us know. Also head on over to our dedicated Augen Gen

Receiving texts at wrong times

Monday 07th of June 2010 / forums.androidcentral.com
First of all, this is my first android device and I am absolutely loving it. I also tried searching on this topic and couldn't find any information. Basically the issue I am having is once in awhile the text messages I receive will come in at a time that is 5 hours from the current time. For example, If the current time is 12:32 all the text messages I receive will say 5:32. The ones I send are at the correct time, but received is wrong. I usually fix this by power cycling my phone but I was just wondering if anyone knew what could cause this. Thanks in advance.

Google Sync Error...

Thursday 18th of April 2013 / forums.androidcentral.com
This is the 2nd time this happens since I have had this phone (I have had it for several months now). I noticed my time is wrong and my calendar is all jacked up. So I go into Google Sync and it says Google Sync Error and the lil sync arrows stay red. I tried a method where you sign out of google and sign back in but it says "You dont have a network connection" ... this has been happening since yesterday from around the time Android Central posted the article people were having problems with Google. My bars are grey on 3G or 4, and even when I connect to my Wi-Fi the bars stay grey and I cant do anything. My phone data is pretty useless right now. Texts work even though they are all over the place, and I can also make and receive calls. Anyone know whats up and how I can fix this sync error? It is frustrating having the wrong time on my phone at all times of the day. Thanks and I hope to have a response by the time I get back from work thanks guys.

something is wrong with their nexus texas repair center!

Wednesday 25th of June 2014 / forums.androidcentral.com
i just want to use this forum to share my experience again. as a person who has sent the same tablet five times to their center, i can say that i know pretty well the repair process. i just sent my replacement - refurbished tablet (it randomly rebooted, and one time it powered off automatically.) to their center two weeks ago. it was picked up by fedex on monday, they got it on thursday two weeks ago. i can usually see the rma status updated right away on the same day. but this time, it didn't see the RMA status update until tuesday of next week, 4 business days later. then on that thursday or friday, they updated the rma status again from incomplete to complete, however, their fedex code was wrong! they put the received fedex tracking code in it! So I waited until this monday, i chatted with their jamaica service center online, the person saw the mistake, and told me that s/he will report it, and i should see it updated 2 days later. and s/he told me that they already sent me the reloaded android tablet last friday. usually, i sent the tablet on monday, and i will get it by frid

Time is wrong on Accuweather.com widget

Thursday 26th of June 2014 / androidforums.com
I know this has been reported before but I don't see any acceptable fixes. My two Android devices are a HTC One V phone and Samsung Tab 2 7" tablet. I use the Accuweather weather/clock widget on the home screen on both.On the tablet the time shown exactly (to the second) matches the tablet's clock. But the cellphone shows significantly different time.About an hour ago I read a suggestion to put the phone in Airplane Mode and see if the clocks match up. They were off by 19 minutes at the time.I did it and sure enough the clocks matched when I turned Airplane Mode off.But now, just an hour later, the Accuweather widget says it 7:12am while the real time and the one shown on the upper right of the phone say 7:33.Any way to get them to sync?

"Clock" App or widget shows wrong time

Wednesday 10th of September 2014 / androidforums.com
Hi Guys.First android mobile for me that I got second hand. The only annoying thing so far is the time on the home screen is off by and hour and a couple of minutes. I tried removing the battery for 30 seconds, and the option which automatically gets time from provider. There is a "Clock" app which has a few options and one of them takes me to the home screen where the time is wrong. The Clock App also shows that same wrong time. I can only set an alarm and I am unable to change the actual time. There has to be a way to Synch the time to the phone's system time (which is CORRECT). I have read many people with these problems and I tried a few of the "easy" fixes, like "airplane mode" and changing the option for automatic to unchecked, and then rechecking it... removing battery, rebooting phone, etc. Please help. Thanks. It is an Optimus Net LG P690b aka Optimus Link (I think) Thank you in advance!
