WMV format and Android tablet- Android tablet not playing .wmv movies

Wednesday 12th of September 2012 /
“I can’t play (.wmv) video fills on my Galaxy Tab 2. All my videos transferred fine but when I try to play some movies (in .wmv format) an error message appears saying 'Sorry, this video cannot be played'. Why this happen? I thought .wmv is a supported format, isn’t it?” Why should my Android tablet not play .wmv videos? This is a frequently asked question in Android tablet forums. It’s a puzzle to many new GT users, because WMV is mentioned as a supported format if you check Android tablet specifications-Android tablet supported format: 3gp, mp4, avi, wmv, flv, mkv In fact Android tablet plays most .wmv movies, but not all of them. Some people say that the error message is caused by high resolution, but per my test Android tablet 2 10.1 handles 1920x1080 HD .wmv files just fine. The real matter is codec. WMV is just a container format in which media contents could be compressed using wmv1, wmv2, wmv3 codecs. However only the wmv3(vc1) is a supported codec to Android tablet- Android tablet supported codec: MPEG4, H.263, Sorenson H.263, H.264, VC-1, DivX/

Best video formats?

Saturday 31st of March 2012 /
I'm new to the Android OS. I just got an Acer Iconia A100. I've found the list of supported video formats. But I'm wondering if there's a consensus on: 1) The best quality video format? Since the A100 doesn't have the screen resolution of, say, an iPad 3 then it seems like there might be point at which the higher quality formats can't be displayed anyway. 2) The most file size efficient video format for ripping movies to? Ideally, it would be nice to fit several movies on a micro SD card. 3) Any particular formats that are known to play better with Android video players? Thanks

Chrome for Android adds data compression option, Youtube now supports VP9 video

Wednesday 15th of May 2013 /
Save substantially on your mobile data usage when using Chrome and YoutubeAs the Google I/O 2013 keynote gets moving along, Google is getting into some of the new technology it is using to save users data when using their products. First up is an update to the beta channel of Chrome for Android, which adds a "data compression" option in the settings to cut down on data usage. When turned on, it will use a compression proxy to pass pages through, converting images to the WebP format (which are 30-percent smaller than JPEG) and compressing all components of the page. The example given over a month of browsing with this Nexus 10 tablet above is a 46-percent savings in data usage. That's a big deal on today's limited data plans. Also on the data usage front, Google is announcing that Youtube will start making the move to supporting the VP9 video format as a possible replacement for H.264. You don't have to know much about what VP9 does behind the scenes, but the end result is raw data savings with no loss in quality. Google used the example of a short HD video clip
