Weather Here [Android app review]
Saturday 10th of March 2012
Your Android smartphone is your go-to device to keep current on just about everything, so it's no wonder that weather applications have become so popular. There's an abundance of weather apps on the various Android markets out there, but many of us are looking for something simple, that sits in the app drawer waiting for you to need it versus something that's more in-your-face with widgets and animations. I think I just found the one I'm looking for.Weather Here does only one thing -- display the weather for where you're located. There's nothing to set up, it just checks to grab your location (it uses Wifi and cell tower location first, keeping the GPS off unless absolutely needed) then tells you the current weather, a forecast, and a local radar map. Using NOAA/National Weather Service data, it seems fairly accurate, and the application is fast to load and doesn't bog down your phone with fluff. If you like the fluff, I can understand and Weather Here probably isn't for you. Think of it as a no-nonsense approach to show weather data on your phone, bu
App to locate phone and remotely lock phone?
Friday 17th of September 2010
I had a scare today where I left my phone at the gym and thought I had lost it. Whats a good app to locate the phone remotely? (preferably works with GPS AND cell tower location, because I don't have GPS on most of the time.)It would be nice to be able to remotely lock it as well... looks like there are some options available but I'm not sure which one works. The thing with the app store is that you can't sort by reviews, its hard to tell which app is good and which one doesn't work
google maps "my location" problem
Wednesday 18th of November 2009
I have a Rogers Magic on the AT&T network here in the US. Its a 1.5 system. On my old phone, the BJ-II running WM6, in google maps I could get my not-so-accurate-location from the cell tower. It wasnt aGPS, it was just a rough guesstimate of where I was at.With this magic, is this functionality just not possible? It seems the only way to get a rough estimate of location is to use wifi of gps.The igoogle web page is able to get my location though, it knows what city Im in, and its not using wifi/gps to do this, so I dont see why google maps isnt doing the same thing. Also, I'd like to upgrade to 1.6 but I dont know in my phone is CRC1 or CRC24 or 32a or 32b.my baseband ver is 62.52S.20.18U_22.214.171.124my kernel ver is 2.6.27-dd63d1eb u70000@Android-X01my build num is 2.16.631.6 146733 CL#33776 release-keysHow can I find out my CRC number and the 32 #?Also, how do i manuall close apps? the "stop app" in "manage applications" isnt working for any of my apps

App to locate lost phone
Tuesday 09th of November 2010
HiI recently lost my phone, and had an app on it that texted me the location. Unfortunately I was overseas and didn't get the phone back, but it was a good little app - but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it or find it in the market. The exact fucntionality was that when a different sim card is put in the phone, it preiodically sends you 3 texts with the location of the phone by cell tower, GPS and another (WPS I think?) format. So you get a rough location and also the phone number of the person with the phone. Handy...Anyone got an idea of what this app was called? It's not Wavesecure, Lookout (which totally failed to locate the phone or restore the backups - rubbish), Where's My Droid...As I say, done an extensive web and market search and can't find it anywhereAny help much appreciated.Cheers
Check out my app: GasBot
Monday 10th of November 2008
Hey guys, I just published my first app to the Market called GasBot.GasBot allows you to quickly search all of the gas stations around you to find the best prices. As of right now it just uses your GPS/Cell Tower location to search, but in the near future I'm going to build out a search by address as well.Let me know what you think, and you can get more info at http://www.gasbot.net.Also please note, this is trialware. You get two weeks to try out GasBot and after that you'll have to pay for it. It's only $7/yr and compared with the money you'll save using it, I think it'll easily pay for itself. I'd appreciate people not giving me bad ratings in the market because its only a trial as I have to pay my data providers so the margins (for me) are very small. Thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy it! Also if you'd like to suggest any new features, I cruise around here quite a bit so I'll see anything in this thread or my PMs. You can also suggest features through the website.
Android Forums - View Single Post - Support Stock weather app not showing correct location
Monday 29th of April 2013
I had this issue on my Old HoX, and on my SG3. I assume if I get a one I will also have the same issue after seeing who does the weather app. The issue is accuweather, that's who does the weather app on the all these phones. The accuweather app looks at who your ISP provider on wifiand where the signal comes from or what tower your getting cell from and in many cases this can be in a nearby city. The app has never picked up my city correctly unless I'm in a big city on any phone unless I set it manually. I tried other weather apps and almost all of them pick up my city correctly as they use GPS and not my ISP or cell tower city to determine my location.
A-GPS vs. Google Location Services?
Saturday 18th of June 2011
Can someone (without guessing) explain the distinction? I thought that A-GPS was side information given to the GPS to help it acquire more quickly, so cell tower info and/or wifi locations. I was having trouble with my Droid X GPS acquiring at all and someone on another forum said there is some issue with Google location services messing up the GPS, so I disabled it. I expected that I wouldn't be able to update A-GPS data because of that, but I still could (in the GPS status app). So, is A-GPS something else? More importantly, can I fly across country and have my GPS still acquire in seconds without GLS enabled? Thanks.
CDMA location-based app
Sunday 03rd of August 2014
I'm looking for an app that will turn on my Wifi when I am at a particular location and turn it off when I'm not there. I have seen many apps advertised that use cell phone tower location information so it is less battery-intensive than GPS, but I haven't been able to get any of them to work. Automateit pro doesn't seem to find any cell towers for some reason. I've also tried Wifi-matic and rsc Wifi at home. I am using Chitchat mobile which uses the Sprint network. So I think it should be the same for anyone using Sprint, Virgin Mobile, etc. Has anyone gotten an app like this to work on one of these networks? I am using a Samsung Galaxy Victory on a no-data plan.
GPS taking too long to poll location?
Wednesday 05th of November 2014
Hi all. I've been having a bit of an "issue" for a long while now, back with my previous phone the Droid Razr and now this one. It seems like the GPS just isn't able to poll my location quick enough. So apps like Google Now and Assist just don't recognize where I am at the time and instead are defaulting to the cell tower miles away. So I'm always getting "Time to home" cards when I am at home, traffic cards for places I'm not at, and home detection with Assist obviously isn't working either. I can observe this happening when I open Google Maps. The blue dot for maybe 3-4 seconds is miles away with a large radius around it, then about 5 seconds after opening the app will it lock on to where I am. So GPS does work, it just seems that apps like Google Now and Assist don't seem to be waiting long enough for this to happen and as a result I'm always being positioned where the cell tower is making their functionality utter useless... Anybody have any location issues similar? I'm not sure if it's the area where I live or what, but it'll happen anywhere I go in my area.
